So, what's LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®and how does it create results for businesses? Part 2
In part one of this article, I wrote about LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® at a very high level. In this article, I'd like to dive deeper about using this in business and other settings. You'll notice above that I've put five pictures in a collage. Each of these pictures represents a part of team identification, LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® usage and how the team would like to use it, and things that will affect that usage. You couldn't possibly have known that without experience in LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®, and you also could't possibly have covered all of the above in a typical work day.
Determining things such as team identification typically takes, weeks or months to determine. I'm certain in some cases that it's never determined or takes a very long time. This is where LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® comes in; in a workshop designed for your team and/organization, you can determine these things in as little as a few hours! How, you ask? Well, I won't cover the specifics of how LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® works regarding techniques however, I will tell you that using the standard process of 1. Posing a question 2. Building the model 3. Discussing the models 4. Reflecting on what you've just discussed and learned truly works to unlock parts of your brain that aren't used 100% by just talking and listening. BUILDING unlocks knowledge that already exists but can't be accessed easily, and helps you learn something in a new way.
So, once again, how does this create results for you and your business?
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® can be used in various forms. It can be used at high level to determine strategy building for products or service. It can also be used at a mid-level such as product design. Additionally, it can be used at a low-level or operational level for team development, collaboration, or PO (person-organization) fit when hiring. You'll notice that in the pictures I listed above, the large picture in the middle has many models and connections. This is what's called a "system" and you can use this to layout your entire business in 3-D. Every model and every connection means something (via metaphors, of course) and this gives you a much better "eagle eye" view of how your business, team, department (and more) are connected, how everything can be affected by a simple change, and much more. Ultimately, what ends up happening is the team and/or organization has a much better idea of how the business is doing now and how it could or should look like in the future after changes. LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® allows you to imagine risks and rewards of making decisions in 3-D without having to spend weeks on presentations to multiple stakeholders. You can get everyone in the room and BUILD and COMMUNICATE!
What happens once I'm done building? Where are the results?
The results occur as a result of participating in a workshop AND implementing the solutions that you've just created. You've gone through the workshop, found your own solutions as a team and/or organization and now it's time for you to put those new found solutions and knowledge to work! LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® allows you to be more creative, fosters imagination and enhances memory. Going through a workshop leads to more buy-in and engagement from the team and/or organization, removes any barriers to change since you've mostly likely discussed those in your workshop and now, it's time to see the results!
Additionally, because you're able to get everyone in the room all at once and communicate, your results are realized faster and with less barriers. To get the best results, it's recommended to use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and workshops using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and materials throughout your change initiative, strategy building, team development (and more) process rather than one time in the middle or towards the end.
